In 2003 Dignity U Wear, a fledgling charity serving Jacksonville, Florida, and Stein Mart, national retailer also based in Jacksonville, established an extraordinary partnership that allowed Dignity to become a viable, growing national organization.
Each Stein Mart store began raising money for Dignity U Wear and identified a nonprofit in their market to receive clothing. Since the partnership began, Stein Mart associates at the company’s 263 stores have raised over $2.3 million dollars for Dignity U Wear! Their communities, in turn, have received brand new clothing totaling over 1.2 million pieces, valued at over $20.6 million, to provide to over 135,000 men, women and children in need. Thanks to Stein Mart’s commitment, Dignity U Wear has been able to distribute more than 6.6 million pieces of clothing, valued at more than $120 million, to over 450,000 people nationwide.
It is rare for a for-profit company to have the foresight to play such a leading role in building something that helps so many people, but the achievement is remarkable. Now Stein Mart is planning a national promotion during the holiday season to partner with its customers to raise funds to support Dignity once again. This time, Stein Mart and Dignity will focus on helping women and girls in Stein Mart communities across the country.
