Master P, Lil Romeo and Dignity U Wear Spread Christmas Cheer
By Guest Blogger and Dignity Volunteer: Michelle Campbell
I watched magic unfold today when I volunteered to represent Dignity U Wear at an event for children hosted by Master P. I was a foster child for the first three years of my life and know what it is like to go without. I know the feeling of not having new clothes, new toys, or even a Christmas gift under the tree.
The event took place at the Downey Recreation Center in East L.A. where we distributed brand new clothing provided by Spirit Tex and toys to underprivileged children and their families. Walking up to the recreation center I could already hear the sound of Christmas music being played over a loud speaker and laughter from the volunteers working inside.
When I arrived, everyone was wearing red Santa hats, bustling around trying to get everything set up just right. New clothes and toys were being laid out for the children. I could hear the line of people outside the recreation center getting louder and louder and growing as more and more families arrived. As the first child entered, we greeted them with applause and cheers. Master P and his son, Lil Romeo, warmly welcomed every child as they came in. As I stood at my station, handing out the donated clothes, I knew we were making a magical moment happen. Many of the children arrived in worn clothing or obvious hand-me-downs. As each child came to my station, I was able to hand them a new shirt and pair of pants. That was such a memorable and great feeling. The families were so appreciative and the kids held their new outfits, smiling from ear to ear.

Today was a very memorable day for me and one that I am so grateful to have been a part of. To know that every one of these children received a new Christmas gift was a gift itself. We often get wrapped up in the festivities of the holiday season and forget that there are many people who will be going without, whether it be clothing, toys or even a warm meal. I will remember this day for the rest of my life. Thank you for enabling me to be a part of this special day and for the gift that will allow each of the children there to start the New Year with a new outfit for school and a new sense of dignity.
